The Gorilla Tag virtual reality game has been turning heads and soring arms since its release in 2021 and so far it has taken the VR world by storm. This is thanks to its addictive multiplayer gameplay and simplicity. Plus, the game is free to play until recently on Steam but is still free on Quest VR app store.
In the spirit of “making the best of what we have (or enjoy)” and “being all we can be”, we gladly support competitive play for Gorilla Tag VR game with the mission to discover Gorilla Tag champions.
Here’re the details on how you can participate and make the best fun and accomplishment playing this popular VR game.
Each competition type uses the same infection game mode, unless otherwise explicitly mentioned.
Types of Competition
- League – The seasonal league competition where Gorilla Tag (GT) teams compete to rank on top of the leaderboard. Based on COMP Gorilla Tag community.
- Tournament/Playoffs – Upcoming bracket competition for Gorilla Tag with prizes. Keep in touch with us for future info.
- Mini-league – Anyone can form their own Gorilla Tag mini-league and play against one another in a small group. Comes with player stats and your own team’s leaderboard. Coming soon!
Game Mode
The default game mode for every type of competition is the main game mode called infection. Each match begins with players from the tagging team wearing the lava-colored gorilla (with orange spots) outfit. Opposing players who are tagged by these lava gorillas will be “infected” by it, thus, changing its color to lava.
Gorilla Tag League
Gorilla Tag teams compete in a seasonal competition where matches are played to determine the rankings on the league standings. The league system that we currently follow is COMP Gorilla Tag.
The top teams will proceed to playoffs and the champion will eventually be decided. New league season is starting soon, so please form a team or join one and register.
League Rules
Complete league rules are available on COMP Gorilla Tag Discord server. But here are the important details.
- Matches are in 4v4 format, meaning each team must have four players. If a team does not have enough players, a 3v3 is forced
- Best of five rounds (first to win three rounds)
- No players under 13 years of age.
- The season works in two phases
- Seeding season – teams will play against each other for points
- Playoffs – teams will either move on or be eliminated (bracket style)
League Points System
The league works on a point system where the teams with more points are ranked higher. Below is the breakdown on how points are awarded.
- Win by normal win – 2 points
- Win by forfeit – 2 points
- Loss – 1 point
- Loss because you forfeit – 0 point
League Gameplay Rules
- Each match is based on five round format. The first to win three rounds wins. Each time a team wins a round, one point is given. So, the team that earned three points first will win the match.
- In each round, each team takes turns to be the tagger (lava monkeys) or the runner (normal monkeys). A round is won based on which team that could run for the longest time without having all its players tagged. Here’s an example. In round one, Team A (chaser) took two minutes to tag all the players of Team B (runner). This means Team B recorded a run time of 02:00. Then, when Team A becomes the runner, Team B took two minutes and 30 seconds to chase down everyone from Team A. This means Team A wins the round because they recorded a run time of 02:30 against 02:00 of Team B. Team A wins a point for this round. Eventually, if Team A wins two more rounds (two extra points), against Team B which earns no points, Team A wins the match with a score of 3 (Team A) – 0 (Team B).
- There shall be a designated referee for each match.
- Each round begins by allowing runners to have ten seconds headstart to run. Once that time is up, the taggers are released, and the referee starts timing the match.
- After every runner is tagged, the referee will stop the timer and record the run time.
- There’s a three-minute cap. During a round, if the clock reaches three minutes and the chaser team has yet to tag all the players from the other team, then the tagging team loses the round. If both teams reached the time cap in the same round, then the round is replayed.
- If each team recorded a time of only two seconds difference from each other, the round is also replayed. There’s no tie result for each round. Which also prevents the occurrence of a tie (draw) result in a match.
- Each team shall have four players. If a team does not have enough players, a 3v3 is forced.
- Matches are held on the forest map only.
How to Join the League
You need a team to join the league. You can either form your own team and register it with the COMP Gorilla Tag organizer, or join an existing team.
How to Join a Team
You’ll need to try out for a team to join one. The easiest way to try out is to join a team’s Discord server and look for a “how to tryout” channel or something similar. You can find a list of teams under #recruitment-center (mostly for new aka unborn teams) or in #team-discords (for official teams).
How to Create a Team
Sign-up on FinalField site and create your team. Next, create your team’s Discord server and start recruiting Gorilla Tag players by going to #recruitment-center under COMP Gorilla Tag Discord server and posting it there.
Later on, at COMP Gorilla Tag Discord server, enter the #role-assign channel and tap on the Unborn Captain button, as shown below.
After pressing that button, it will spawn a new section called Unborn Captain containing two channels – #unborn-announcements and #new-new-team-applications where you can find details about how to submit your GT team. Finally, you need to submit your team application form.
There’s a limit of 12 players for a team, including the captain with a minimum of five players. No players under 13 may participate in the league due to Facebook and Discord’s terms of service. If a team misses two games in the season, the team will be forcefully disbanded.
Your team may also need to have played scrim matches before it is accepted. A scrim is like a test match aka a friendly match with another GT team.
Gorilla Tag Tournament or Playoffs
A tournament shall be a bracket-style competition with the possibility of a single knock-out format. Single knock-out means each team shall be eliminated after the first loss.
The tournament can be organized as part of the Gorilla Tag league (playoffs) or as an independent championship. Qualification can be open or by invitation only.
More info shall follow.
Gorilla Tag Mini Leagues
A new way to enjoy playing Gorilla Tag is to form your own mini-league and play among your close buddies. This sort of group play could help improve teamwork and foster a closely-knitted community within the Gorilla Tag universe. It can be used as a training ground for Gorilla Tag teams to compete in full-fledged leagues and tournaments.
This concept closely resembles a private league in fantasy sports where you could invite your friends to join and play together. Each mini-league comes with a leaderboard and each player shall have their own personalized stats. The league creator shall be in charge of managing the mini group such as inviting members, banning members, and submitting match scores and results. There’s also a wall to post discussions. League manager can assign others to be moderators too.
